Southwest Spice Mix

We love to eat southwestern or Mexican foods such as nachos, tacos or burritos, among many others. We also love to mix “Taco Seasoning” with sour cream topped with salsa and cheese for a quick movie night appetizer. Purchasing the pre-made packets of taco seasoning can get to be quite expensive not to mention MSG and preservatives, so we decided to blend spices together to make our own.

Southwestern Spice Mix

Southwest Spice Mix

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste (optional)
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes, or to taste (optional)

Mix all spices together until well blended. Store in air-tight container. Use to season ground beef or sour cream as mentioned above.
